I use Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook 2007 all in one day on most days,
and I like things from each; Gmail's got a good idea of threading that
includes your own messages, Apple Mail can be made very sparse and
works fast and Outlook's "mail list left, read right" layout along
with configurable coloring and flagging is very helpful.

I would argue, as I have already, that Gmail is smooth and slick and
well executed, but not that it is truly innovative. For any given X
that's already in any other mail client, it comes up with a pretty
good answer; I just don't think mail clients are a solved problem
quite yet.
