I know a bit or two about networking, network coding, security, 
secure coding, debugging, performance engineering and profiling, 
mail protocols such as SMTP and IMAP, message formats and semantics.

I'm also of the school that says choices should be made in the 
design, not offloaded to the end user, as opposed to the view 
that maximizing user choice, configurability and customizability.

And I've been pondering writing my own "Alpha Mail" program, 
excessively surprized not only by the poor quality of mail 
software but even more so by the downward-spiraling trend in 
them.  We had  mailers in 1985 that were, for their time, decent 
-- but somehow things have not improved since then.  Quite the contrary...
