against databases

One of the biggest problems with a database approach is import and 
export. Whatever the solution I think it's important that the migration 
path to Letters - as well as the migration path from Letters - should be 
easy. After ten years on Eudora 6.2.4 I'm finally trying out 
Thunderbird, Eudora 8 and Postbox (a commercial off-shoot of 
Thunderbird) and having to run gigabytes of mail through buggy 
converters is no fun. But the Thunderbird version of mbox is a defacto 
standard.

I think a standard format that is already supported is the way to go - 
mbox or maildir or something of that same ilk. Here's a couple of 
articles on these two formats that seems to be based on experience:
